Colleges and Universities in Bogotá have a major impact on the city and region’s economy. They are not only the major employers, but they also attract national and international industries to the city and surrounding region, which includes highly needed technology industries. The city is Colombia’s educational “Mecca”; it boasts more schools, colleges, and universities than any other city in Colombia and contributes with high academic levels.

Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga (Autonomous University of Bucaramanga)

is a private post-secondary education institution in Bucaramanga, Colombia. The university was founded in 1952 under the name of Instituto Caldas. In 1956 the institution was renowned as a law school, and became a university under the current name in 1987. Administration, Law and Public Accounting are its oldest programs, although it currently offers 19 programs in a wide variety of fields.

The University has had as a guide the execution of its missions; a cultural one: the conservation and enrichment of the national culture; a scientist: the investigation and the progress of the science; a professional: the preparation of the experts and the technicians that it requires the society; an educational one: the student’s integral formation and the development of their personality; a social one: the service to the community, the diffusion of sciences and the elevation of the patriotic and moral spirit. All this has been inspired by the freedom of teaching and research.

The Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga has been characterized by its cultural impulse in the region, which offers diverse academic programs, among which it stands out the program of Law for its high level of quality and its internships in the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Other outstanding academic program at the university is its Medical Faculty. This is an enriching program equally in research and genetics, among others.

The Faculty of Social Communication, with its two core features, Organizational and Journalism. This faculty was credited by the Colombia’s National Accreditation Council for six years as a High Quality program, as one of the six faculties of Communication with this title in the Colombia. UNAB received the certification of Acreditación of international Quality granted by the Consejo Latinoamericano de Acreditación de la Educación en Periodismo. CLAEP that stands out the “execution of the norms of quality and excellence in the formation of journalists for the period 2006-2012.” It locates it like one of the ten best programs of Latin America.

Those two recognitions join other important achievements of the Faculty of Social Communication of the UNAB in 2006. Among those that deserve to stand out: the best position at national level in the tests of academic quality. For example, Ecaes; the reward given to the Periódico 15, the Faculty’s students newspaper, as the “Best University Newspaper” of Colombia and there dozens of other recognitions that has been added in its relatively short years of circulation. The last of these accolades was the Simón Bolívar National Journalism Prize in the Best interview category. This honor was received by journalist Pastor Virviescas, current chief editor of the paper.

University of America is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational research university located in Bogotá, Colombia. It was founded as an architecture school in 1956. It then grew into an interdisciplinary and technological research institution. University of America emphasizes quality over size while concentrating on a core of academic disciplines. The university has a with a strong reputation in engineering and applied sciences.

University of America has three schools which contain 8 academic departments. Of particular interest is their Faculty of Chemical and Pretroleum engineering.

University of America was one of the four founding members of the Colombian Association of Universities “ASCUN” (Asociación Colombiana de Universidades).

Universidad La Gran Colombia
Universidad La Gran Colombia Is a private university located in Bogotá, D.C., Colombia. It was founded in May 24, 1951 by Julio César García Valencia, recognized Colombian historian of the Twentieth Century.

Universidad de La Guajira
University of La Guajira (Spanish: Universidad de La Guajira), (Wayuu: Shikii Ekirajia Pulee Wajira) is a Colombian public university located in the northern Colombian city of Riohacha, Department of La Guajira. The University of La Guajira was founded in February 1977 as a result of a study by the Urban and Regional Planification System (SIPUR)

Universidad de Nariño
The University of Nariño (Spanish: Universidad de Nariño), also referred to as Udenar, is a public, coeducational research university with its main campus in Pasto, Colombia. The university also has satellite campuses located in the Colombian cities of Ipiales and Tumaco.

The University of Nariño is an independent institution of higher education connected with the Ministry of National Education. The objective of the university is to develop higher education and investigation. This was constructed by the state allowing the access to and developing it on a par of sciences along with the arts to reach excellence.

Universidad de Sucre
Universidad de Sucre (University of Sucre) is a public university in Sincelejo, Colombia. The university was established in 1977. The university has three campuses. The main campus Puerta Roja (Red Door) is mostly an academic department. Next is the Health Academic Department (aka Puerta Blanca -White Door) which is located next to the universitary hospital in Sincelejo with Medicine. Another is the Nursing Faculty and other disciplines related to health. Lastly is the Farm Sciences Department (aka Puerta Verde Green Door) also named “Granja Los Pericos” (The Parrots Farm) with animal science related disciplines.

Universidad del Atlántico
The Universidad del Atlántico (University of the Atlantic) is the primary public academic center for higher education in Barranquilla, Colombia. It is also the state university of the Atlántico department.

Universidad del Atlántico was founded on June 15, 1943 by philosopher Julio Enrique Blanco. The university offers a wide range of educational training at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This includes a diverse range of engineering programs, as well as medicine, business management, law, education, fine arts, and several other areas of study.

The university has over 30,000 students and more than 400 persons distributed in its academic, professorial, and administrative staffs. Nowadays, the Universidad del Atlántico has three campuses in Barranquilla, the North Campus, the Downtown Campus, and the School of Fine Arts. The master plan covers its expansion to other towns in the periphery of the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Universidad del Norte
Universidad del Norte is the main private academic center for higher education in northern Colombia. It was founded in 1966 by a group of businessman led by Karl C. Parrish in the city of Barranquilla. The university started its academic operation on July 11, 1966. At that time it had only 58 students and 10 teachers on core courses of business administration and engineering.

The Universidad del Norte is composed by 8 academic divisions. These divisions are: Engineering, Administrative Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Legal Sciences and the Basic Sciences division and the Institute of Superior Studies in Education.

The Universidad del Norte offers careers in Industrial, Mechanical, Computer, Civil, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Medicine, Business Administration, Law, Psychology, International Relations, International Business, Math, Industrial Design, Graphic Design and several other faculties. In the end, Universidad del Norte offers 21 undergraduate programs, 51 professional specialization programs, 9 Master’s programs, and 2 doctoral programs.

Universidad del Norte is one of the most important cultural and technological centers on the Caribbean region of Colombia, and one of the Top 3 in Colombia.

Universidad de los Andes
Universidad de los Andes (also known as Uniandes) is a private university located in Bogotá, Colombia. Universidad de los Andes was founded in 1948, and currently offers a wide range of career paths. These include Architecture, Design, Engineering, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Physics, Mathematics, Law, Political Science, Management, Music, Social Sciences, Art, and Medicine.

Universidad de Antioquia
University of Antioquia is located in Antioquia Department, Colombia. The main campus of Universidad de los Andes is located in Medellín, however, there also campuses in Caucasia, Andes, Uraba and Rionegro.

Universidad del Rosario
Universidad Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary Major College University) was founded on Roman Catholic principles, in 1653 by Fray Cristobal de Torres. Universidad del Rosario is located in Bogotá, Colombia. Due to its important place in Colombian history, it is known as “the cradle of the republic”. Most faculties at the university are located in the main campus. This campus is in the historic-geographical centre of Bogotá in the historic district of La Candelaria. Nowadays Universidad del Rosario is based on secular ideas and is very influential in Colombian culture and public life. Notably 28 of the Colombia’s presidents have been students of this university. In addition the university has influenced and participated in very important transitional processes like the revolution for the independence from Spain and the Political National Constitution of 1991. As a historical fact one of the most influencial times of the 1886 Constitution’s Supreme Court (1936), (Golden Court) was comprised mostly by lawyers from the Faculty of Jurisprudence from Universidad del Rosario . Currently, the University has seven faculties and one school which offer both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. As of this date there are a total of 20 undergraduate programs at the university.
